The Popular Contest of Grilles and Balconies of Cordoba is held from May 3 to 15 throughout the old part of the city, coinciding with the Fiestas de los Patios, being another of the popular festivals that are part of the many activities of May in Cordoba.
In this contest, participating citizens and homeowners compete by decorating the typical grilles and balconies of the white walls of their homes in the old part of the city, with colorful flowers, which each year become a great attraction for tourists and locals.
This year the number of participating grilles and balconies was more than twenty grilles and balconies, with a total of 29 members, which illuminates the city of Cordoba with a variety of colors and scents, and beautiful corners in which tourists and Cordobeses can recreate contemplating its authentic beauty.
Grilles and Balconies Contest Awards
In this Grille and Balconies Contest the jury will award a total of six prizes to the best decorated grilles and balconies, three first prizes and three runners-up prizes, being these:
- First prize: 900 €.
- Second prize: 750 €.
- Third prize: 600 €.
- Fourth prize: 400 €.
- Fifth prize: 300 €.
- Sixth prize: 200 €.
In addition, the City of Cordoba will provide all participants a second prize for participation. Its amount will be 250 € or 300 € per grille/balcony depending on the size and number of grilles or balconies presented. This amount will be compatible with any of the other established prizes.

Grilles and Balconies Competition Schedule
The contest of Grilles and Balconies will remain for two weeks in the houses of the old town. During those days its schedule is completely free and can go at any time you want because they are in the streets and alleys of the old town and can be viewed from the public road.
Origin of the Cordoba Grilles and Balconies Contest
It is believed that the origin of this contest began in 1919, but it would not be until 1927 when a contest was announced with the objective of rewarding a magnificent neighborhood initiative.
After the Civil War, in 1947 the City Council of Cordoba decided to organize the contest along with the May Crosses, the Fiesta de los Patios and the Fair of Our Lady of Health.
The duration of this contest coincides with the Fiesta de los Patios de Córdoba. But, unlike the Patios Contest that lasts about two weeks, the Contest of Grilles and Balconies will also last two weeks but we can contemplate them at any time of the day we want, as it has no schedule and are located in streets and alleys of the public streets of the city so that, although the contest ends, we can continue to enjoy them as long as the owners take care of their grilles and balconies.
The contest involves all the grilles and / or balconies of the houses located within the historic center of Cordoba, and that are decorated only with pots, natural elements or flowers.
There are many species of flowers that adorn the facades of the houses of the old town in its beautiful railings and balconies, but the ones that usually predominate in the decoration of these bougainvilleas, gitanillas, or carnations of bright and cheerful colors.
