Cordoba Orchestra

The Orquesta de Córdoba is a symphony orchestra with a staff of about 50 musicians, founded in 1992 by the Cuban composer and conductor Leo Brouwer. Since then, it has offered more than 1,800 concerts, has performed first auditions for Europe and Spain, and has premiered works by numerous national and international composers. In addition, it develops an educational work for young people through programs for the promotion and dissemination of music in all educational areas within its reach. Throughout its history it has had numerous conductors, currently its conductor is Carlos Domínguez-Nieto.

History of the Cordoba Orchestra

The Orquesta de Córdoba gave its first concert at the Gran Teatro on October 29, 1992 under the direction of its founder and chief conductor, Leo Brouwer, and with the artistic patronage of Adolfo Marsillach and Rafael Orozco. That same year the Orchestra was founded by Leo Brouwer and its institutional promoters, the Junta de Andalucía and the City Council of Cordoba. The Cordoba Orchestra has given concerts in venues such as the Mosque-Cathedral or the Alcázar de los Reyes Cristianos in Cordoba, the Teatro Real and the Auditorio Nacional in Madrid, the Auditorio Nacional de Cuenca, the Auditorio de Almería, the “Manuel de Falla” in Granada, the Teatro Falla de Cádiz, the Campoamor in Oviedo, the Maestranza or the Lope de Vega in Seville, the National House in Prague or the Golden Hall of the Musikverein in Vienna, among others.

The Orquesta de Córdoba is a member of the Spanish Association of Symphony Orchestras (AEOS). It is the musical formation that has put on music stands, more than any other orchestra in the world, has the largest symphonic repertoire of Spanish and Latin American guitar, which is why it was nominated in 1999 by the Sociedad General de Autores (SGAE) and the Asociación de Intérpretes y Ejecutantes (AIE) as “Best Classical Artist”. In 2003, the Academy of Music nominated again, together with Plácido Domingo and Jesús López Cobos, the Orquesta de Córdoba for its CD of the two Triple Concertos, by Leo Brouwer and Tomás Marco, as Best Music Album.

It has performed first auditions for Europe and Spain, and has premiered works by numerous national and international composers such as Andrés Valero-Castells, María Teresa Prieto or Joan Albert Amargós. In addition to performing in the pit and accompanying ballets such as the Mario Maya Ballet, the Ballet Flamenco de Andalucía, or the Royall Ballet of London, the Orquesta de Córdoba has approached a wide symphonic repertoire, from baroque to modern compositions, opening successfully to other fields of music in collaborations with artists such as Egberto Gismonti, Vicente Amigo, Raphael, Medina Azahara, whom the Orquesta de Córdoba has accompanied, live and/or in the studio.

Throughout its history, the Orquesta de Córdoba has had several conductors, its first chief conductor and main promoter was the Cuban guitarist and composer Leo Brouwer until 2001, when he was appointed conductor emeritus of the orchestra and was replaced by the Canarian conductor Gloria Isabel Ramos Triano, who became the first woman conductor of a Spanish orchestra. From 2005 to 2012 the chief conductor was the Venezuelan Manuel Hernández Silva, who was followed in the position by maestro Lorenzo Ramos from 2012 to 2017 until 2018 when Carlos Domínguez-Nieto, the current conductor, arrived.

He has participated in the International Encounters of Cinematographic and Scenic Music of Seville, in the International Festival “Cosmopoética”, in the White Night of Flamenco, in the Cycles of Contemporary Music of Malaga, in the Musical Autumn of Soriano, in the Spanish Music Festival of Cadiz and in the Encounter of the Arts among others, in the Festival de Música Española de Cádiz and in the Encuentro de las Artes among others, also in several International Music Festivals such as those of Granada, Lucena, Úbeda, Sanlúcar, Guadix, Santo Tirso (Portugal) or Marseille, as well as being a regular presence in the Festival Internacional de la Guitarra de Córdoba.

He has toured Spain and Greece. In 2008 in the Czech Republic and Austria, playing at the famous Musikverein in Vienna.

Since 1992, the Orquesta de Córdoba has been carrying out educational work and attention to young people through various programs that it carries out together with the Conservatorio Superior de Música and the Orquesta Joven de Córdoba y de Andalucía to promote music in all educational areas.

The Orquesta de Córdoba participates since 2012 in a Social Project with the aim of bringing music to audiences that cannot or do not usually go to the spaces where they sound, such as people admitted to the hospital, in prison, in nursing homes, among other places, also promoting solidarity concerts with different causes of social interest.

Who are the members of the Cordoba Orchestra?

Carlos Domínguez-Nieto is the current principal conductor and artistic director of the Orquesta de Córdoba.

The Cordoba Orchestra is composed of 42 musicians, of which 8 are First Violins, 6 Second Violins, 4 Violas, 4 Cellos, 3 Double Basses, 2 Flutes, 2 Oboes, 2 Clarinets, 2 Bassoons, 3 Horns, 2 Trumpets, 3 Trombones and 2 Percussions.

The musicians have 35 working hours per week, 25 hours of collective work and 10 hours of individual study per week. Rehearsals are held in a different place from the performances and vary according to the complexity of the program. They are distributed as follows: Monday (morning), Tuesday (morning and afternoon), Wednesday (morning), and Thursday morning, dress rehearsal, since the Orchestra’s concerts are on Thursdays.

Musicians’ salaries range from 22,000 euros per year for musicians to 32,000 euros per year for soloists.
